Eugenia (Gina) South @Eugenia_South Dr. Eugenia South MD MPH is an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and Director of the Urban Health Lab. She studies the effects of neighborhood environment and urban greenspace on community health and safety. Dr. South’s work engages community partners to rehabilitate abandoned spaces and build economic investment in Black communities to directly address the root causes of health disparities. Her recent work revitalizing vacant lots resulted in improved mental health among participants. She has also demonstrated associations between urban tree coverage and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, crime, and gun violence, with an emphasis on how urban restoration can reduce health disparities in the most disadvantaged neighborhoods. We applaud Dr. South’s efforts to directly dismantle structural racism, combat gun violence, and improve the health of her local community!
