NephJC is an independent, user-supported medical education organization dedicated to providing the best post-publication peer review to every nephrologist around the world. And to do it at no cost.
Thoughtful critical appraisal of the 26 most impactful manuscripts every year, and even more with shorts. Half of those are additionally covered by our podcast, Freely Filtered.
No paywalls. No subscriptions. No industry support.
NephJC exists because our readers and listeners choose to support it.
For 12 years, you’ve made this possible.
Help us keep it going for the next 12.
DONATE
We suggest attendees pay $600 per year; this will keep the lights on.
All donations include a ticket to the NephJC party.
If you just want to go to NephJC Night at Kidney Week, and don’t want to make any additional donation to we will have a link for you soon. Check back.
Where does the money go?
NephJC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Nobody makes a dime running the place—but running the place isn’t free.
We have an absurd number of domains to register and maintain: NephJC.com, Flozinator.com, NephRun.com, NSMC.blog, FreelyFiltered.com, Rosebook.club, VisualAbstract.org, and, yes, NephMadness.com. Cha-ching.
NephJC, NSMC, Channel Your Enthusiasm, and The Skeleton Key all have websites that need to be hosted and maintained. Those fees add up.
We pay for Zoom, Auphonic, Descript, stock photography, and the other tools we use to create and distribute FOAMed.
And then there are the NephJC trophies. Those things are surprisingly expensive—especially when we ship them halfway around the world.
None of these expenses is enormous. But together, they add up.
We also believe an online community should occasionally become a real-life community. So once or twice a year, we get people together. We’ve bowled at KIDNEYCon, taken over a bar at NKF Spring Clinical, and every year we throw the best party at #KidneyWk.
And yes, we’re doing it again this year. Keep Friday, October 23rd open.
That’s what your donation pays for: the infrastructure, tools, and community that keep NephJC independent, open, and free.

How have we paid for all of this?
Over the years, we’ve funded NephJC in a lot of different ways.
The first year, we literally passed the hat among the NephJC workgroup. Satellite Healthcare has been a longtime and generous supporter. In 2019, Arkana gave us an unrestricted three-year grant. That was awesome. And in 2022, sales of the Flozinator Pin helped carry us through the pandemic.
But the till is getting low, and we need your help.
Our bylaws prohibit NephJC from accepting money or support from the pharmaceutical industry. Given our mission—independent, critical appraisal of the medical literature—we believe that would create an unacceptable conflict of interest.
That’s a hill we are proud to die on.
It also means we’ve cut ourselves off from the deepest pockets in medicine.
Our dream is for NephJC and everything associated with it to be supported by the people who actually use it. Think Wikipedia or NPR for nephrology education: everything remains free to everyone, but the people who value it and can afford to support it help keep it going.
No one will ever encounter a paywall. No one will ever be turned away because they can’t pay. The podcasts, journal clubs, visual abstracts, websites, and everything else remain free and open.
That’s why we’re holding the annual NephJC Fall Pledge Drive.
If NephJC has taught you something, helped you take better care of a patient, prepared you for journal club, made you laugh, or just made nephrology a little more fun, please pony up.
Help keep NephJC independent.
