World Kidney Day Chat

This Wednesday, Feb 17th at 9pm EST we will be discussing plans for World Kidney Day which is March 11, 2021. The theme for this year is: Living Well with Kidney Disease.

From the WKD website:

The World Kidney Day Steering Committee has declared 2021 the year of “Living Well with Kidney Disease”. This has been done in order to both increase education and awareness about effective symptom management and patient empowerment, with the ultimate goal of encouraging life participation. Whilst effective measures to prevent kidney disease and its progression are important, patients with kidney disease – including those who depend on dialysis and transplantation – and their care-partners should also feel supported, especially during pandemics and other challenging periods, by the concerted efforts of kidney care communities.

This is consistent with nephrology’s movement toward patient oriented outcomes. We see this with the work of SONG initiative and with new drugs like difelikefalin (When is that drug going to get approved?). It is also consistent with the goals of The Advancing American Kidney Health Initiative whose goals are to break inertia by rewarding success rather than paying for failure.

World Kidney Day is a day where we can shine a spot light on our field and our patients to get them the support and honor them as they deserve. But doing that requires planning and Wednesday’s chat is intended to give people a moment to think about and plan for this year’s WKD. The hashtag is #WorldKidneyDay. See you there.
